Drawing the Line Between Doing Business and Social Responsibility: Credit Cards, Charities and Crises

Credit card companies have been profiting from charitable contributions long before the earthquake in Haiti. Many 501C3 nonprofits who receive the majority of their funding through credit cards won’t make a fuss, because they need those services. Without the option for funders to use credit cards, many nonprofits would not survive. And yet, upwards of 3% of the funder’s intended donation is redirected from the charity to the credit card company in the form of a transaction fee.
